'1966 REFUGIO STATE BEACH'

SPACER
I was contacted by Kevin to produce for him, a present for his wife, Diane. It seems she and her sister, Karen went to Refugio State Beach, CA with their grandparents when they were kids. Diane spoke often to Kevin of the fond memories of camping and fishing during summer vacation there, therefore, he felt it would be a perfect gift. It was a group effort, between Kevin, his sister-in-law, Karen and myself to reproduce the memory for Diane. They explained what they wanted in the painting. I went to Refugio myself and took some photos, then e-mailed them a couple to choose from. Once they chose the one they liked, I made a sketch, e-mailed it and once I got the go ahead; I started on the paintings. Yes, I said 'paintings'...plural. A funny story... Karen lives fairly close to me so she came down to talk to me about the commission and see my work. Well, afterward, Kevin informed me that she was just so excited about my work that he wanted me to make matching paintings for BOTH of the sisters. Below, I have included parts of the e-mail Kevin sent me, describing how the paintings were received, in addition to Dianes' personal expression.

A PERSONAL EXPRESSION FROM MY CLIENT:

"To say that the paintings went over extremely well would be an understatement. I presented Diane with her beloved Refugio painting. She was sitting down on a small stool next to her mother (and had apparently just been talking about “Grandma Miller”) when I walked into the room for the unveiling. The moment it was uncovered, [they] spontaneously both jumped up and wept while calling out “That is Refugio”. Diane’s mother and Karen both had emotions and tears well up. Diane believes it is the most beautiful piece of art work she has ever seen, and the intent of “capturing a memory” for her was a complete success. While the room was still buzzing and fussing over Diane’s painting, I slipped out and brought in Karen’s. I slipped up by her side and said “Robbie said to give this to you”. The whole process started over again, this time with two sisters reliving a part of their life together that meant so much. Needless to say, Diane and Karen are very happy, and both were very surprised.

My memory will be of the day that you made a memory live as long as there is a breath left in two sisters. Again, thank you so much. I appreciate your devotion to your art. You are a talented artist and a warm human being."...Kevin Ousley

will this work? DIANE'S PERSONAL EXPRESSION:

"How can I thank someone who so beautifully gave me a picture of my dearest memories? My picture of Refugio brings back to mind the smell of saltwater, the sand warm under my feet, the point, fishing for perch and rock bass, shell hunting, 10 cent Big Stick popsicles and most importantly, my grandparents, Vic and Audrey Miller.

I look at the picture and remember being so unconditionally loved and safe. Words can’t possibly convey the gratitude I have for your ability to capture all these emotions at one glance. When Kevin “unveiled” the painting, my eyes immediately knew what they were seeing, the 4 people in the picture whom I knew to be my grandparents, Karen and I at our favorite beach.

Thank you for the lives you touch through your art. I’ve said many times that Karen and I are the only 2 people on this earth who have these memories with our grandparents, and now others can see why this time in our lives were so very special. My sister is always willing to step in when needed and I am so happy you painted another picture just for her. My husband loves making memories of his own and he outdid himself with this surprise. Thank you, thank you, and thank you"....Diane Ousley

HUENEME BEACH

'HUENEME LIGHTHOUSE'

SPACER
My client, Kellie Swift requested a painting of the Hueneme Beach area with the lighthouse as a gift for her husband on their anniversary. She has a friend who is an amateur photographer who had taken the photo on the left. She felt it was the perfect scene, so I went to work...

A PERSONAL EXPRESSION FROM MY CLIENT:

"This painting has so many special meanings for my husband and I. I came here as a child to harvest abalone, search for sand dollars and make sand candles. Later, I learned to surf here and enjoyed many a bonfire. These rocks were the some of the first steps for my children. My husband spent the majority of his youth here too and still surfs here every chance he gets. It was very important to me to have this painting and Robbie did a fabulous job. This scene is from the fall of 2007. It was just in time. My painting was finished in January and by then the rugged seascape had been changed forever. These rocks were manipulated to form a foundation for the Hueneme Beach Promenade. I am so pleased and grateful to have had this painting done by Robbie. The autumn shadowing and her attention to the details of the sea that day grip me and have left a visual of one of the warmest spots of my heart." ... Kellie Swift

CLIFFS OF MOHER

'CLIFFS OF MOHER -
IRELAND'

SPACER
The photo on the left was taken by clients of mine, Jeff and Dena while on a very special vacation to Ireland.

Visiting this ruins on top of the cliff was a memorable experience for them. Therefore, a painting rather than just a photo in an album seemed like the best thing for them. Jeff and Dena wanted the ruins to be more visable in the painting and also wished for me to bump up the color a bit. I think you can see I was able to accomplish this quite nicely.

A PERSONAL EXPRESSION FROM MY CLIENT:

"Everytime we look at the painting it takes us back to the beautiful countryside of Ireland. We wanted our painting to be very life like without looking like an impressionist piece. Robbie did an outstanding job of creating our painting exactly the way we envisioned. It's wonderful to have a painting in our home that is so meaningful and reminds us of the best vacation we've ever taken."....Jeff and Dena Horne

'OMINOUS OAK'

The photo on the left was taken by a photographer named Jesper Widen while he was out on a hike at Casper's Wilderness Park located in Orange County, California. He felt it would make a great painting for over his mantle once he saw my work. I got the 'OK' from him to add more color and you can see the result. Unfortunately, you cannot tell by this just how much texture is on this painting. When it was completed and I delivered it to Jesper and Mary Anne, I was happy to find that they were just as estatic with it as I was. You may view other photographs by Jesper at www.widenhorizons.com

A PERSONAL EXPRESSION FROM MY CLIENT:

"I am most impressed with Robbie's bold use of color and texture. Only this talent of hers could harmonize the wide use of tints and shades from palette to canvas. She has added her own personal style and emotion to my photograph. Her vision has rejuvenated the original dark scene."....Jesper Widén

'SANTA BARBARA'

My clients, Tom and Yuliya Knox wanted a painting of Santa Barbara, but had no photos. He explained what he wanted in the painting: Tom liked the layout of one of my Laguna Beach paintings and said he wanted no people or cars in it. Also, Yuliya definately wanted to be able to see the red roofs of the buildings that are so well known in Santa Barbara. I said, "No Problem!" So I drove to Santa Barbara and took many photos myself. The result was a combination of a couple of photos. I find that often, other flowers or trees need to be added either for balance or for just the composition the client wants. I then e-mailed them the sketch here on the left and after one small adjustment to it that Tom and Yuliya wanted (see if you can find it), I started on the painting.

A PERSONAL EXPRESSION FROM MY CLIENT:

"We first saw Robbie's work on the cover of the SkyWest Magazine issue from March/April [2004] and thought how wonderful it would be to have a commissioned work of our favorite Santa Barbara. Robbie is wonderful to work with and went out of her way to meet our expectations, and adding the little touches of SB that we love. Robbie's style of painting and wonderful colors are a unique addition to our art collection."...Tom and Yuliya Knox
